What to Expect from Your First Visit
You may be visiting an Osteopath for the first time and may be unsure about what is involved. We outline this below - please contact us if you have any questions.
Case History - telling the story
The osteopath will ask for details of your medical history and current problem to help formulate the beginning of a diagnosis. Osteopathic Examination The osteopath will examine your posture to gain insight to the overall picture of body function. This is usually combined with asking the patient to do some simple movements. The osteopath will then feel with his/her hands (palpation) to gain further information about the muscles, joints and connective tissue (i.e structure of the body and how the parts interrelate). |
Medical Examination
It is often necessary for the osteopath to carry out various clinical tests so that the practitioner can assure themselves as to the true nature of the situation. This may involve examination of the neurological, respiratory or cardiovascular system, eg reflex tests, taking blood pressure, listening to the lungs or heart or requesting x-rays. A good rapport is maintained with GP’s and other local health care professionals so we can work together for the benefit of the patient. This may include referrals.
